Despite the fact we did ATM Over Satcom Interoperability back in 1993 for NATO NC3A and CECOM, CELAR and DERA  and have had various standard telco products used in GCHQ links, Metrodata's work in Defense really started to gain momentum in 2002.

We had a variety of products designed specifically for Satcom interfacing, and the precise clocking and odd bitrates seemed to be useful.

What started things off was probably our work with Verestar (now part of SES-Americom), Telenor and NASA GSFC (Goddard Space Flight Center). Metrodata provided our AP3000 product basically as a HSSI Fiber Optic Modem, where we transported 51.84Mbps satellite from the Landsat 7 imagery satellite and put it over AT&T OC-3 ATM network. Previously this link could only operate to 45Mbps with the existing HSSI FOM's so NASA got more throughput.

This fixed rate HSSI module was a special development. To allow further scalability and faster data rates we then developed the Flexi HSSI Module which supported asymmetric/symmetric and simplex bitrates from 8kbps to 90Mbps in 1bps increments.

Following on from a successful deployment with NASA for Landsat, Metrodata then did another development via Lockheed Martin and CSOC to support replacement of ECL Fiber Optic Modems.  So we did an ECL variant of the Flexi HSSI Module.

So what we had was a solution that was scaleable, precisely clocked and supported lots of odd bitrates. That was our starter for ten.
